WHY SOMATIC (BODY) WORK?

bringing awareness to the body

The word somatic refers to the body. Why is it important to do work to bring more awareness to our bodies and to our somatic sensations? This relates to a neurobiological term called interoception. Interception refers to your ability to notice and to understand your bodies sensations.

 

When you train yourself to notice your bodies sensations, you can start to soothe your nervous system, improve your organs’ functions, and improve your emotional regulation. With practice, you can start to calm yourself before you are flooded by anxiety, panic, or anger (“fight or flight”) or pull yourself out of shut-down, depression, helplessness and apathy (“freeze or collapse”). We want to give you the resources to remain stable and grounded in the body, and maintain parasympathetic mode (“rest, digest and heal”). This will restore balance to your nervous system and help you recover from chronic stress.
